Kavalam Narayana Panikkar is the creative architect of the ‘Thanathu’ theatre movement of Kerala, which is now a major component of modern India’s theatre. In a career spanning over four decades, he revived the age-old Sanskrit drama traditions, identifying interrelations between the evolved art forms and folk arts, successfully creating a fusion that has enthralled the contemporary audience since then.
Experimental and non-conformist, his features using non-realistic tools have themes in close proximity to real life, its anxieties, struggles and confusion.
Bharat Gopy had been an integral part of Thiruvarang, the precursor of Sopanam (present BhasaBharathi), and graciously acknowledged Kavalam’s influences in shaping and widening his horizons as an actor and his theatre sensibilities.
The in-house master of ceremonies, online janitor and chronicler of the life and times of Bharat Gopy - playwright, author, director, producer and actor extraordinaire of Indian Cinema.
Mani Kaul, celebrated film maker interviewed Bharat Gopy in 1979 for the Times of India, immediately after his winning the National Award for the Best Actor. Read the full interview here.
